About the Area
Being one of the most picturesque places in Greece and Europe, Nafpaktos may well charm its visitors with its Venetian castle, it’s small, horseshoe-shaped port and its pebble-shore beaches. The romantic Venetian castle situated on the hill of the town can offer you a unique view of the sea and the opposite coasts of Peloponnese. its two major beaches on the left and right of the port, called Psani and Gribovo respectively, are full of hotels, cafeterias and restaurants, thus offering not only a relaxing summer swim but also a joyous atmosphere. More importantly, the Venetian port is immersed withsigns indicating its historical significance, the most important of which is the statue of the Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes, who took part in the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. Finally, three equally important architectural landmarks are the clock-tower situated at the fortress, the Tower of Botsaris at the north side of the port square and the Ottoman mosque situated at the eastern part of the Nafpactian port.
Nafpaktos is one of the most beautiful medieval towns in Greece and the castle and fortress are well preserved. The coast is full of restaurants, cafes and nightlife and though it is not well known to foreign tourists its charm is no secret to the Greeks who come here for summer holidays or stop here for an afternoon swim and a meal on the road that connects Delphi with the west coast of mainland Greece. Travelers crossing the Rio-Antirion Bridge a few miles west who are familiar with Greek history stop here to walk the cobblestone streets, visit the Turkish Mosque of Fethiye Tzami, built in 1499, and explore the castle and the harbor fortifications.
Nafpaktos has two Blue Flag beaches with plenty of shade, fish tavernas and cafes within walking distance of the harbor.
