About the Area
Union Island is part of a SVG . It has a surface of 9 square kilometres and lies about 200 km west-southwest of Barbados and is within view of the islands of Carriacou and the mainland of Grenada, which lie directly south. Clifton and Ashton are the two principal towns.
The SVG archipelago is made up of a collection of 32 islands the major ones being Carriacou, Young Island, Bequia,, Canouan, Union Island, Mayreau, Petit St Vincent, and Palm Islan and remainder of which are smaller and mostly uninhabited. All are dependant on the nation of SVG. The main language spoken is English but also a minority speak French and the currency used is the EC$ (Easter Caribbean Dollar).
Union Island has close to 3000 residents and is 3 miles long and approximately 1 mile wide, but its landscape and hills make the island look and feel much bigger. The geographic location of Union Island makes it one of the most spectacular Caribbean Islands as it is surrounded by the beautiful Tobago Cays Marine Park and several other stunning private island resorts like Palm Island, Mustique and Petit St Vincent.
The main town is Clifton where most of the businesses and hotels are located. andAshton is the second town. Ferry services operate between Clifton and Saint Vincent, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday on the MS Barracouda and the MS Gemstar. Ferry services also operate bi-weekly between Ashton and Hillsborough, Carriacou (Grenada) on Mondays and Thursdays.
