The Altiplano is grounded in agriculture with cereals, olives, almonds and livestock forming the economic bedrock of the area and the towns and villages of the countryside .There are however very few fences and the freedom to roam is almost universal. The low population density means that there is space for wildlife both winged and mammalian.
Galera is a typical small Spanish town built at the confluence of 2 rivers in a location which has been occupied by humans since pre-history. it has a rich cultural heritage which it expresses in fiestas and musical and choral groups. The necessities of life are catered for in local shops, bars, restaurants and trades people with greater varieties of all available further afield in adjoining villages towns and cities. it has a health centre, nurse and doctor available every weekday, an emergency clinic 7kms away and a general hospital 25kms away in Baza.
The road system is excellent and gives access to airports at Granada, Murcia, Almeria, Alicante and Malaga.
The house is a cave house so is unique in it’s arrangements and architecture. Like all cave houses it moderates the outside temperature meaning that it is cool in summer and can be kept warm in winter with very low expenditure of energy. it has a A rating for energy efficiency. Moreover being on two floors natural circulation of air keeps the rooms fresh and avoids condensation without recourse to fans other than to cope with bathrooms and cooking.
The house is approached by a road which goes above the cave descends the hill and crosses in front of the house entrance. The entry to the cave is over the patio, enclosed by raised flower beds and having a storage shed to one side. The entrance lobby is split by a glazed partition and provides storage shelves hanging space and the downstairs bathroom’s hot water tank. Moving through the partition brings us to a hallway with 3 exits.
To the left is the downstairs bathroom with toilet wash basin and shower, straight ahead we will return to later, and to the right is the main sitting room. This room has a widow, fireplace, mantle shelf, TV aerials for satellite and local Spanish TV and ample power points. Straight ahead is the kitchen and pantry. Here is a window, breakfast bar/work surface with storage below, a further work surface and double sink again with storage below, microwave support, cooker and extractor fan.
Returning to the sitting room on our right is a glazed door to the separate dining room again with ample power points. Beyond the dining room is a further glazed door to a double bedroom with a walk in wardrobe. Returning to the entrance hall the ‘straight on’ glazed door leads to a room which we use as a study. it has shelves for books and computer equipment, the internet termination, a built in wardrobe and 2 rows of coat hooks. Through this room up 4 shallow steps brings us to another double bedroom with a further built in wardrobe. Executing a U turn brings us to the main stairs to the upper level. From the sitting room access is gained to the main bathroom with window, bidet, toilet, bath+shower and washbasin.
