Bars and Restaurants in La Florida
The most famous of the small strip of establishments along Calle Escorpio is the Abbey Tavern. This is an Irish themed bar & restaurant run by a Spanish family. Indoors offers a well stocked bar, comfortable seating areas, a DJ booth and small dance floor. The spectacular gardens boast wonderful shade among the plants, trees and rockeries. Two outdoor bars keep the thirsty crowds well refreshed and there is plenty of seating for al fresco dining. The Abbey also has an outdoor stage for live performances and is the place to visit for late night fun and dancing.
Equally as popular, but mainly with Spanish residents is the Torre Bar. Delicious local cuisine is accompanied by great value beers and the usual generous Spanish measures of spirits. At times the kitchen staff will come out with tasty plates of free tapas. There is an indoor dining area and stage for live music as well as a lovely shady garden. Here during the summer they also offer live music and weekend BBQ’s from their huge grill station.
Beside the Río Segura and flush with the base of a barren mountain of rock, the historical heart of Orihuela, with superb Gothic, Renaissance and, especially, baroque buildings, well merits a detour. The old town is strung out between the river and a mountain topped by a ruined castle. The main sights are dotted along the district, more or less in a line, and are well signposted throughout.
Orihuela has a vibrant Moros y Cristianos festival, and reprises the atmosphere with an enormous medieval market at the end of January.
